Gili Shark Conservation is a project that aims to restore coral reefs in the Gili Matra Marine Recreational Reserve and create the first recognized shark nursery by 2025. A team of five staff operate this amazing organisation, small but making their mark. Of the five staff – three are local people (Musa, Katon & Cakra) who are employed as scientists, dive guides, and instructors - they are incredibly talented and knowledgeable and could brighten any day with their infectious smiles. Rose who is the founder of the organisation, oversees the project – however, is responsible for having the most inspiring and brilliant ideas possible, the reason why this project is so magical. Maisy, is the lead scientist and the most passionate person you’ll meet - she’s is Rose’s sidekick and together they are pretty much unstoppable. The amount of passion and love these five people hold is enough to inspire anyone..

As you may know, I work as a tour guide and science communicator on The Big Duck here on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The Fleurieu has an incredible diversity of wildlife, and the Big Duck has been blessed with the opportunity to take people out and view the wildlife. Now I witness firsthand the excitement and curiosity every individual possesses when we encounter a species – specifically an endangered species. This develops an extended awareness and even sparks the want to ask questions and learn more, something that never would have happened without taking the tour. However, it gets even better! Many studies have shown that when people participate in wildlife tours it increases conservation-related behaviors.

Now, let’s look at some evidence: here’s some research based on the Shark Cage Diving ecotourism industry in Port Lincoln......

I’ve always had a fascination with water, particularly the ocean and I’m sure a lot of you have too. I’ve always seemed to be drawn to it as it gives me a sense of calm and often inspires me. Lately, I’ve started to question why.

This interest was sparked by reading ‘Blue Mind’ by Wallace J. Nichols. He explains how water makes us happier, more connected and better at what we do, backed up by credible science. Following this, I hope to inspire you all to spend more time in, by and around South Australia’s beautiful coast.

It is no secret that being out in nature positively increases our psychological, social and emotional wellbeing. However, the ocean seems to have the upper hand in comparison to green landscapes. It has been revealed that everyday visits to the coast, were associated with higher levels of relaxation, calmness and revitalization than urban parks or open country side. Additionally, people living by the coast are actually heathier and happier.....
